Mecca is the holiest city on Earth and the spiritual direction of Muslims worldwide. Millions visit annually to perform Umrah, experiencing unforgettable moments of devotion within the Grand Mosque.

What is Umrah?
Umrah is a visit to the Grand Mosque in Mecca performed at any time of year outside the Hajj season. Known as the "minor pilgrimage," it is a confirmed Sunnah with immense reward. The Prophet ﷺ said: "From one Umrah to another is an expiation for what comes between them."

Umrah Rituals Step by Step

Step 1: Ihram
Ihram is the state of ritual consecration, entered at the designated Miqat for your region. Men wear two seamless white cloths; women wear modest, covering clothing. Upon entering Ihram, the pilgrim recites the Talbiyah: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk…"

Step 2: Tawaf
Perform seven counter-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba, beginning and ending at the Black Stone. After completing Tawaf, pray two rak'ahs behind the Maqam Ibrahim.

Step 3: Sa'i Between Safa and Marwa
Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, starting at Safa and ending at Marwa. Men are encouraged to walk briskly between the two green markers.

Step 4: Halq or Taqsir
After Sa'i, men shave their heads completely or trim their hair, while women cut a fingertip's length. With this, Umrah is complete and the pilgrim exits the state of Ihram.

Practical Tips for a Perfect Umrah Journey

Best Times for Umrah
Ramadan: For maximum spiritual reward, though expect heavy crowds.
Sha'ban and Muharram: Less crowded with relatively mild weather.
Late Winter (January–February): Comfortable climate and reasonable prices.

What to Pack
For men: Ihram garments (two unstitched white cloths), a belt, and sandals.
For women: Loose abayas and scarves, preferably in white or neutral colors.
An Umrah guide booklet or app on your phone.
Sufficient personal medication, especially for blood pressure and breathing.
Umbrella and a personal water bottle.

Best Hotels Near the Grand Mosque
Hotels closest to the Haram lead the options: Abraj Al-Bait (Mecca Clock Tower), Hilton Mecca, and Mövenpick Hotel. The ideal walking distance most pilgrims manage comfortably is 500 to 800 meters from the mosque gates.

Getting Around Mecca
Electric Train: Connects the holy sites (Mina, Muzdalifah, Arafat) during Hajj.
Haramain Bus Lines: Connect hotels to the mosque at nominal prices.
Taxi / Uber / Careem: Available 24/7, but prices rise during peak hours.

Essential Supplications
During Tawaf: "O Allah, I ask You by Your greatest name and Your greatest pleasure to admit me to Paradise and save me from the Fire."
At the Black Stone: "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar."
On Safa and Marwa: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and all praise, and He is over all things capable."

After Umrah
Drink Zamzam water with the intention of healing and blessing.
Pray in the Grand Mosque as much as you can.
If time allows, travel to Medina to visit the Prophet's Mosque.
Buy authentic Umrah gifts: Ajwa dates, oud perfume, quality prayer beads, and Zamzam water bottles.
